Causes of death

Cancer and circulatory diseases are the main causes of death in Uruguay in 2023

The MSP reported that there are about 14,000 new cases of malignant tumors and 8,200 deaths from malignant diseases each year.

Cancer was the leading cause of death in Uruguay in 2023, along with cardiovascular diseases, reported the Minister of Public Health, Karina Rando, during the Winter Conferences on Oncology, held in Montevideo.

This is due to a decrease in the number of deaths from circulatory system diseases, which fell from 9,239 in 2022 to 7,998 last year, while cancer cases remained practically the same in 2022 (7,993) as in 2023 (7,983).

We will have to wait for the data from 2024, “when cancer could become the leading cause of death in the country,” said Minister Rando.

Last year, the remaining main causes of mortality were respiratory system diseases (3,846) and external causes of morbidity and mortality (2,464). In addition, there was a large decrease in deaths from Covid-19, which went from 2,305 in 2022 to 410 in 2023.

According to the minister, there are about 14,000 new cases of cancer each year – not including non-melanoma skin cancer – and 8,200 deaths from cancer-related diseases.

In this sense, the type of tumor with the highest mortality rate for men is lung cancer and for women it is breast cancer.
