Senator admits to having lost sleep over violence in the country

Aumenta demanda de salud mental tras pandemia, según psiquiatra

Santo Domingo.- The senator of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) for the province of Azua, Lía Díaz, advocated this Tuesday for the creation of an institute that would be in charge of taking the necessary measures to deal with problems of mental health affecting many citizens.

“I have been losing sleep over the last few days because of all the negative news we have seen in the media. We have to be careful with the dissemination of this news, as it can create a domino effect,” said the congresswoman, during the Senate session.

The legislator referred to the latest acts of violence that have occurred in the country, in one of which a mother is accused of killing her six-year-old daughter in Santo Domingo Este.

The incident occurred last Thursday at the Infapol Residential Complex in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, and the victim’s mother, a doctor who holds the rank of first lieutenant in the Army, is being prosecuted for it.

“We have to advocate for a better mental health system in the country, but also for an institute that monitors this pathology that is causing so much pain to society,” he said.

He recommended that the media “handle with care” the dissemination of violent acts, since, he said, they can encourage others to commit similar crimes.
