Since August 15, an oil spill has affected nearly 225 kilometers of beach on the western coast. Photos and videos posted on social media show the magnitude of the oil spill.
According to coastal residents, the spill extends to the beaches of the states of Falcón and Carabobo. However, Petróleos de Venezuela has yet to report on the causes or actions to stop the environmental disaster.
Residents themselves estimate that the spill covers some 225 kilometers from Palma Sola, in the Juan José Mora municipality, in Puerto Cabello, to Boca de Aroa, in the José Laurencio Silva municipality.
Fishing and boating suspended
According to the fishermen and residents affected, navigation and fishing activities are now suspended. There is no confirmation from the institutional authorities regarding these prohibitions.

Climate 21: Venezuela faces an average of seven oil spills per month
After receiving new reports of oil spills in Carabobo and southern Anzoátegui, the program First Hand TV of Radio Fe y Alegría News and Channel 11 of Zulia spoke on Thursday, August 15 with Alejandro Álvarez, general coordinator of the NGO Climate21who warned that in Venezuela there are around seven oil spills per month.
Alvarez said the figure could be even higher due to the lack of official reports detailing the origin, causes, effects and any other relevant information about these incidents.
“Without adequate and accurate information, we cannot understand what is happening; we cannot prepare for any situation and, therefore, we see how the damage, in general, tends to multiply,” he said.
He explained that the permanent registry that Clima21 keeps throughout the country is based on information obtained from the media and complaints made through social networks.
