Unitary Platform rejects PSUV's "coup d'état" in Torres de Lara municipality

Carlos Arturo Álvarez, representative of the Platform in the Torres municipality of Lara state, denounced that the State does not allow the publication of the documents signed by Mayor Javier Oropeza where he names Timaure as acting mayor. Oropeza went into hiding after denouncing a campaign of persecution and harassment against him that also reached his family.

The Unitary Platform rejected the appointment of councilor Lasmit Verde as acting mayor of the Torres municipality in the state of Lara. The coalition of opposition parties described the action as a “coup d’état” by the councilors of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

“We as the Unitary Platform are dismayed and deeply reject the coup d’état that the PSUV councilors have attempted to carry out, complying with an order issued by the Superior Administrative Litigation Court, which seeks to remove the citizen mayor elected in 2021 (Javier Oropeza), and ignoring article 87 of the Law of Municipal Public Power, related to the appointment of the mayor in charge in his absence, in addition to various articles of the constitution” said Carlos Arturo Álvarez, representative of the Platform in the municipality on August 19.

The Carora Municipal Council (Torres municipality, Lara state), with a pro-government majority, appointed Lasmit Verde, linked to the PSUV, as acting mayor on Saturday 17th, after declaring a “power vacuum” by Javier Oropeza, who went into hiding after denouncing a campaign of persecution and harassment against him and which also affected his family. He has been accused of being allegedly involved in violent acts during the post-election protests there.

Álvarez denounced that the State does not allow the publication of the documents signed by Mayor Javier Oropeza where he names Timaure as acting mayor, so he considers that the persecution experienced by the local leader and some directors of the mayor’s office is a consequence of the electoral result in the municipality in the presidential elections of July 28, in which, according to the spokesman, the candidate for the Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained 61,211 votes, while the official candidate got 31,000 votes.

“Our leader, Mayor Javier Oropeza, has always called for peace and reconciliation, and that is what we are calling for, because we are people of peace. The people of Torres are people of peace. The violent ones are others, who have used force and, with the support of police forces that follow orders from above, dare to carry out this coup d’état. Therefore, the Unitary Platform rejects the violent acts that are being committed,” added Álvarez.

Last Monday, the 12th, Iraida Timaure was appointed as acting mayor of the Torres municipality – through resolution No. A-016A-292 – due to the temporary absence of Oropeza, who had demanded respect for her rights and institutional guarantees. one day before.

Despite this, the Municipal Council held a meeting over the weekend and swore in Verde as the new mayor of that town until the end of the term. According to the new administration, “this appointment seeks to guarantee the continuity of municipal management and administrative functioning in the town.”
