The fateful incident took place on the morning of Thursday, August 15, on Interstate 70, northeast of Denver, Colorado, leaving a trail of pain and grief in both Colombia and the United States.

A trip that turned into a tragedy

According to the news outlet Vanguardia, the story of this tragedy began just a few days earlier, on Saturday, August 10, when Juliana Plata Martínez, a woman from Santander who had emigrated to the United States several years ago, married Rubén Rodríguez García, of Mexican origin.

The couple, who already shared the joy of having a one-year-old son, celebrated their wedding in the company of family and friends. For the occasion, Juliana’s parents, Carlos Joaquín Plata and Luz Melba Martínez, traveled from Bucaramanga to accompany their daughter in this important moment and enjoy a few days of family vacation.

However, what was supposed to be a trip full of joy and celebration turned into a nightmare.

The family was traveling in a vehicle on Interstate 70 when a trailer suddenly overturned, releasing nearly 100 plastic pipes, each weighing approximately 500 pounds, onto the road. One of these pipes struck the vehicle they were traveling in, causing a fatal accident.

The impact was devastating: Juliana Plata Martínez, 39, her mother Luz Melba Martínez, 60, and her husband Rubén Rodríguez García, 32, lost their lives on the spot.

Carlos Joaquín Plata and the couple’s young son were injured and were immediately taken to medical centers where, fortunately, they were discharged the next day.

Solidarity aid for the married couple’s family

Luz Melba Martínez, a businesswoman from Girón, had travelled with the hope of sharing the happiness of her daughter and son-in-law, but unfortunately she met her death in an event that has left the entire Santander community in shock.

Following the tragedy, loved ones of the victims have started a campaign of donation in the United States to raise $95,000 to cover funeral expenses and support little Daniel, the couple’s son, who now faces life without his parents.

This painful event has shocked the Hispanic community in the United States and Colombia.
