In these meetings, both Morena members met with the governors of the state they were visiting to present programs or projects that were carried out in the states; although they highlighted that in the states headed by the opposition, the governors were booed. This happened with the governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri; of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, and of Nuevo León, Samuel García.
The start of the tour
This tour began 12 days after the elections, in which Claudia Sheinbaum won with 49.6% of the votes. In a morning conference, López Obrador announced it and mentioned that he would start it in states located on the border with the United States: Tamaulipas and Coahuila.
“We are going together to Durango, Coahuila and Tamaulipas this weekend. Her team and she are looking at the agenda and we will be very happy to accompany her. We are going to visit some regions of these three states, then the agenda will be announced,” she explained on June 12 at the morning press conference.
During the tour, the president dedicated himself to introducing Claudia Sheibaum and saying that the country will be in “good hands,” since the Morena member will assume office as president on October 1.
“Our country will be in very good hands. I have known Claudia for several years; she was the Secretary of the Environment in 2000, when I was head of government in Mexico City. We have known each other for 24 years and I remember that we had to find a woman who had the capacity to face the environmental problem, because in Mexico City there is the problem of pollution,” he said during an event on June 21 in Oaxaca.
In all the states visited, López Obrador emphasized on multiple occasions that it took more than 200 years after the country’s independence for a woman to lead the Federal Executive Branch.
“Independence was achieved, the first Federal Republic was established and the first president was elected in 1824, Guadalupe Victoria, and since then, 200 years have been pure male presidents and it is only now, 200 years later, that we are going to have a female president, Claudia Sheinbuam. We must celebrate it, because we have been touched by these times of change,” he said that day.
