Primero Justicia warned that the new law against NGOs increases the government’s discretion and worsens the persecution of human rights defenders
The match Justice First On Thursday, August 15, the National Assembly (NA) rejected the approval of the Organic Law to Regulate and Supervise Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in 2020.
“This new law represents a threat to Venezuelan civic spaces and marks a historic precedent for organized civil society. For this reason, we asked the international community to constantly monitor the situation of NGOs in our country,” Primero Justicia said on its account on the social network X.

At the same time, the opposition party expressed its solidarity with Venezuelan NGOs that are being targeted by the closure of civic spaces in the country.
“Several articles of this new Law violate the right to free association, such as Article 13, which states that one of the requirements for registration is to specify the type of financing and whether it is from foreign individuals or legal entities,” they argued.

Primero Justicia indicated that Article 15 of the new law specifies that they will not allow the registration of Non-Governmental Organizations “that promote the fascismleaving to free interpretation of the regime what can be considered fascism, thereby promoting the persecution of Venezuelan human rights defenders.”
The PJ pointed out that NGOs have filled an important gap in the country, especially “in the recording of human rights violations by the State.” This, the party said, has allowed the world to know what is happening in Venezuela.
