Sheinbaum puts her political life on hold and promises to govern for everyone

Sheinbaum puts her political life on hold and promises to govern for everyone

“We have an extraordinary movement,” he said as he looked straight ahead at the first two rows of the auditorium where members of his cabinet and governors from Morena were sitting.

Dressed in white and standing, Sheinbaum gave a speech in which she said goodbye to the aspiring, candidate and virtual president-elect, positions that accompanied her for the last few months.

The majority certificate issued by the Electoral Tribunal of Justice of the Federation (TEPJF) and which recognizes her as the 66th president of Mexico was the reason for Sheinbaum to announce a pause in her political activity.

“From today on, it will no longer be my responsibility to refer to our movement, to our party in particular. I will no longer represent a part of society and from today on I will represent all Mexicans,” he said.

Something similar happened with Andrés Manuel López Obrador when he took over the Mexican government. The founder of Morena asked for leave to separate himself from his party activities and thus only dedicate himself to governing, something that is not recognized by his political adversaries, who saw in him a permanent candidate.

More than 40 days before taking office, Sheinbaum made a suggestion to Morena that the party convene a National Congress to modify statutes and elect its next president, because in Mexico, it is time for women.

“It would be pertinent, as you can see, that we are doing everything head on, to call a Congress of our party this September. I think, it is only a suggestion that our basic documents, our statutes, be updated and that a clear route be drawn up that separates the party and the work of the government in the process of transformation,” he said.

“Giving direction” to Morena and to legislators is nothing new. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did it during his government: during the morning press conference he suggested what and how to vote, what to stop, what method to choose to define a candidate, what to do with the losers…

In addition to that suggestion, Sheinbaum called on her fellow party members to remain united now that López Obrador is about to end his term and leave public activity.

“The best president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will soon be leaving and closing his term. We will always keep the legacy of this great leader and this great president. But we must remain united, continue building, because we owe it to the people of Mexico,” he said.
