Aruntani Company questions the State's inaction in the closure of the Tucari mine

The company Aruntani SAC agrees with Minister Rómulo Mucho Mamani regarding the “inaction of the State” to close the Tucari mine, since 5 years have passed since the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) made the decision to execute the bond that guaranteed the closure of the Florencia Tucari mining unit, and to assume said closure through the state company Activos Mineros SAC (AMSAC).

According to the Aruntani company’s statement, The Peruvian legal framework establishes that, once the bond has been executed, the MINEM commissions a specialized company to carry out the closure activities, which were delegated precisely to AMSAC by Supreme Decree No. 020-2022-EM.

Nevertheless, Aruntani says that more than 60 months have passedAMSAC has not even begun closure activities, which Aruntani has repeatedly reported to both the MINEM itself and the Environmental Assessment and Oversight Agency (OEFA).

There are various studies and reports carried out by both public bodies and internationally recognised specialist companies, which indicate that in the area adjacent to the Florencia Tucari mining unit There is a high mineralization due to the geological characteristics of the area, whose effect is accentuated by the presence of more than 40 geysers distributed along the Titire River, in front of the town of the same name, and towards the Coralaque basin.

Aruntani points out that he has been contributing to the obligations assumed by the MINEM, responsibly maintaining the environmental management of the mine, and having incurred to date in expenses of approximately 40 million dollars. This amount could well have been used in the process of comprehensive closure of the Florencia Tucari mining unit.

They hope that the statement by Minister Rómulo Mucho will lead to the effective start of concrete actions for the definitive closure of the Tucari minefor the benefit of the ecology of the area and in compliance with the Mine Closure Law.
