Fifth Avenue tunnel closed in Havana: why and until when?

AREQUIPA, Peru – The Quinta Avenida tunnel in Havana will be closed from August 14 to August 31, according to a press release from the Tunnel Maintenance Company working group.

The official press De la Isla replied to the information, pointing out that the Provincial Road Safety Commission announced closure measures at certain times and in certain directions of movement during that period in order to reorganize traffic at that important road junction.

The statement says that the tunnel will not be accessible during the aforementioned period due to maintenance works that will cover the path in the direction Playa-Plaza de la Revolución, and then the one from Plaza de la Revolución to Playa.

The notice, directed in particular to the population and to vehicle driversspecifies the application of organizational measures necessary to ensure safe mobility during the duration of the works.

From this Wednesday the 14th until the 21st of next month the direction from Playa to Plaza will be closed, and from the 23rd to the 31st of the same month the direction from Plaza to Playa will be closed, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Authorities recommended that drivers traveling along Quinta Avenida de Playa towards Plaza use avenues 41, 31, 7th and Línea as alternative routes.

They also asked that when Plaza a Playa is closed, traffic should be directed to Linea, 23, 31 and 41 streets.

In the case of pedestrians, it is specified that the option of crossing through the tunnel remains open. Fifth Avenue when there is no personnel working there.

The Quinta Avenida Tunnel, also known as the Calzada Tunnel, connects the western municipalities of Havana with the city center. It was built during the 1950s and is located below the Almendares River, very close to its mouth.

In August, but in 2023, the tunnel was also closed until the middle of the month due to various works repairs that included plastering, pressure cleaning, and painting.
