Gutiérrez Müller: “If we remain silent, we are protesting something”

Arturo Cano and Angel Vargas

The newspaper La Jornada
Wednesday, August 14, 2024, p. 6

In the front row were the top brass of the outgoing and incoming governments: the President and his next successor, as well as the heads of Sedena, the Navy, the Interior and Security, and the head of Government.

Only a few, the first in the long line that had formed hours before, managed to find a place under the tent placed on a corner in front of the National Palace. The rest, a few hundred, followed the presentation (half-heartedly, because the sound was poor) crowding together to try to hear something or – above all – to see if the head of the Executive was there.

It was the afternoon of Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who chose the Zócalo to present her latest book, Silent feminism: reflections from the I, the we, the here and now. In keeping with the title and content of the text, the subject was feminism and silence. In her final message, the author spoke about silence as a form of protest.

A small applause accompanied the words that followed: The privileges of the ruling class are over, because we are all equal, let that be clear..

Many people outside the tent held up their recently purchased books and shouted for autographs. Others held their cell phones to their ears, trying to listen to the live broadcasts from the official websites of Canal Once or the Ministry of the Interior.

The author listened to the request for signatures and said that there would be time, not this day because we would be a real pain in the ass for the policeThere were no signatures, but there was a final message about silence as a form of protest, addressed to those who will take office on the first day of October: “To those who will now govern, starting with our president, of course, I support them, I ask them to never forget where they come from, it’s that simple. And if we remain silent again… we are protesting something.”

The last sentence was accompanied by a gesture with the index finger and the look of someone who anticipates that she will be attentive.

Previously, the presenters were lavish in their praise of the work and its author. She is one of us, she did not go to the clouds, as many do.said the governor of the state of Mexico, Delfina Gómez, at the presenter’s table.

The author had said that the Mexican leader is a good example, a great woman who She has had to endure misogynistic, sexist attacks, which do not only come from the male world..

Journalist Pedro Miguel highlighted the role of Gutiérrez Müller in the abolition of the figure of the first lady while, at the edges of the tent, some citizens adopted the slogan: It’s an honor to be with Bety today!

Raquel Serur, Mexican ambassador to Ecuador, referred to the anger of the young feminists who have demonstrated in this same Zócalo and said that they had a reaction to the author accomplice in the fight.

Journalist and producer Verónica Velasco theorized about the humanistic feminism in front of the President, who came as listener and days before he had referred to feminism as a current of thought validbut elitist, because it does not consider all women.

The presentation was at times a rally: Claudia, Jalisco needs you!shouted an elderly lady, who came from Guadalajara especially to the event, convinced of the electoral fraud of Citizen Movement.

We love youwas read on many cards that Obradorists at heart brought to bid farewell to the President. A National Indigenous Council blew a conch shell and its leader held a scroll in which he asked for the president’s re-election: AMLO 2024-2030.
