Retail sales fall 1% in June, says IBGE

Retail sales volume fell 1% in the country in June this year, compared to the previous month. In May, the sector registered an increase of 0.9%. Retail, however, showed increases compared to June last year (4%), in the year to date (5.2%) and in the 12-month period (3.6%).

The 1% drop from May to June was driven by a reduction in activities in hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-2.1%), other personal and household items (-1.8%), fabrics, clothing and footwear (-0.9%) and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-0.3%).

Growth rates in the other four activities, however, prevented major losses for the sector. The retail sectors that saw growth in June, compared to May, were fuels and lubricants (0.6%), office, IT and communication equipment and supplies (1.2%), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (1.8%) and furniture and household appliances (2.6%).

Nominal revenue fell by 0.1% compared to May, but increased by 9% compared to June 2023, 8.3% in the year to date and 5.9% in the 12-month period.

Expanded retail

Expanded retail trade, which includes the vehicle and construction materials sectors, in turn, saw a 0.4% increase in its sales volume, with increases of 4.8% in construction materials and 3.9% in vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces.

Expanded retail also grew 2% compared to June last year, 4.3% year-to-date and 3.5% over 12 months. Nominal revenue increased by 0.8% compared to May, 6% compared to June 2023, 6.7% year-to-date and 5.5% over 12 months.
