Freites Municipal Councilwoman (Anzoátegui State) Beatriz Andrade was deprived of her liberty on Monday, August 12, during the presentation hearing before the Third Court with jurisdiction over Terrorism in Caracas.

It was learned that Andrade was presented in a telematic hearing from the Palace of Justice in El Tigre and was accused of the alleged crimes of inciting hatred, criminal association and terrorism. She is detained at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) in that town.

The opposition councillor was arrested at noon on Wednesday 7 August, when she was in the municipal council, adjacent to the Cantaura mayor’s office.

It was learned that Andrade’s arrest is linked to the investigation being conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office into events that allegedly occurred after the July 28 elections, for which three arrest warrants were also requested against several opposition members.

According to information released by the prosecutor appointed by the defunct constituent assembly, Tarek William Saab, the leaders Jorge Luis Díaz Bermúdez, José Francisco Landaeta and José Agustín Franco Salazar are being investigated for the alleged crimes of inciting hatred, criminal association and terrorism.

Saab said that “they have made repeated calls to carry out violent acts in Cantaura, Freites municipality, against the citizens and institutions of the State, seeking to undermine the peace and tranquility of the Venezuelan people.”

Franco Salazar is also a councillor, Díaz Bermúdez is a leader of the Fuerza Vecinal party and Landaeta is the president of the Cantaura Users Committee.

With the arrest of Andrade and the arrest warrant requested by the Prosecutor’s Office against Franco Salazar, who is a councilor for the Primero Justicia party, the opposition was left without representation before the municipal council of Cantaura.
