A devastating forest fire has raged for four days in the community of Carachamayoc in the district of Iberia, Madre de Dios, causing destruction in the Salhuana area. The flames have destroyed homes and vegetation and are seriously endangering wildlife, livestock and residents.
Local firefighters, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster, have been unable to contain the spread of the fire, which continues to consume natural areas and homes in Salhuana.
The fire, which witnesses told RPP was caused by the carelessness of a man who lit a fire in the area, is now spreading out of control, with flames reaching more than two meters in height.
Families, mainly farmers, are on constant alert, trying to protect their homes and livelihoods. Access to the area is complicated by the precariousness of the only bridge connecting the region, which has hampered the intervention of firefighters and aggravated the crisis.
