Maduro says he will not hand over power to the opposition and demands an “iron fist”

AREQUIPA, Peru – Dictator Nicolás Maduro said Monday that he will not hand over political power to the “fascist oligarchy,” a term he uses to refer to the Venezuelan opposition, and demanded an “iron fist” to quell protests unleashed in the country against Chavismo.

The ruler made the statements during the meeting of the National Defense Council and the Council of State, collected by the spanish agency EFE.

“We will not hand over the wealth of this country to imperialism, we will not hand over political power in this country to this fascist oligarchy,” said the Chavista leader.

He also demanded that the Venezuelan justice system, under his command, act with “speed and an iron fist” to punish those responsible for the demonstrations, stressing that the “financiers” and organizers “must go to jail.”

“I demand that all branches of government act with greater speed, greater efficiency and an iron fist against crime, against violence, against hate crimes, an iron fist and severe, accurate justice, enforcing constitutional principles,” he demanded.

During the meeting, Maduro pointed out the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and the presidential candidate of the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, as instigators of the protests.

“Where are the masterminds behind this violence? Where are the financiers of this violence? Where are those who planned it? (…) Where is Mr. Edmundo González Urrutia? Why is he fleeing? Why is he afraid? Why doesn’t he show his face? Where is the biggest fascist, Mrs. Machado, who orders people to kill, who orders people to assassinate?” the Venezuelan dictator asked.

On July 29, the National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by the Venezuelan regime, accredited Maduro with 51.95% of the votes in the elections of Sunday, July 28, while Edmundo García only received 43.18%.

The opposition, which has managed to gather 81% of the voting records, currently public in a web page for review by citizens and independent organizations, states that García far surpassed Maduro by almost 40% of the votes.

Dozens of countries have recognized González Urrutia as the president-elect, or have otherwise demanded that the electoral records be presented in the correct conditions.

In the midst of the repression unleashed by Chavismo against the protests, the organization Criminal Forum reports 1,315 “verified and identified” arrests in Venezuela, including 117 of minors between the ages of 14 and 17.
