Spain assumes diplomatic representation of the Dominican Republic in Venezuela

José Manuel Albares pointed out that Spain assumed the diplomatic representation of the Dominican Republic in Venezuela since Monday, August 12. He said that he maintains contacts with Yván Gil and the Unitary Platform in order to find a “negotiated” solution to the crisis.

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, reported on Tuesday, August 13, that Madrid will assume the diplomatic representation of the Dominican Republic in Venezuela following the breakdown of relations between Santo Domingo and Caracas following the accusations made by the Caribbean nation regarding the election process.

Albares said that since August 12, Spain has been in charge of Dominican diplomatic affairs and stressed that his country will be available “to all countries and all brotherly peoples of Latin America.”

Likewise, the Spanish foreign minister revealed that he held telephone conversations with his counterpart, Yván Gil, and with various leaders of the Unitary Platform and the Command with Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado, respectively, in order to move towards a “negotiated” and “dialogued” solution to this new crisis.

“Spain has been talking with the government and the opposition and will continue to do so to help the brotherly people of Venezuela,” he said, adding that they are “in tune” with the position of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, on the issue of the elections.

“For international pressure to be effective, neither Spain nor the other countries should act on their own. This is not a race to see who can go the furthest in their demands,” he said.

In this regard, the Spanish foreign minister revealed that the Venezuelan crisis will be a topic of discussion on the agenda of the European bloc’s Foreign Affairs Council scheduled to take place on August 28 and 29.

In addition, José Manuel Albares praised the role played by former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in the country’s crisis, which he believes is also working to find a solution through diplomatic and peaceful means.
