MADRID, Spain.- This Monday, August 12, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) presented a Senate resolution condemning the Cuban regime for its serious human rights violations and its role as a haven for nations that pose threats to U.S. national security.
The resolution highlights the Cuban government’s continued violations against its citizens and its collaboration with adversarial nations such as China, Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. Rubio and Scott emphasize the urgent need for the United States to counter the destabilizing influence of the island’s regime, which has increasingly aligned itself with these nations, facilitating its presence just 90 miles from U.S. shores.
The document also calls for greater accountability from Miguel Díaz-Canel for his repressive actions and his role in undermining regional stability.
Senator Rubio underscored the United States’ moral responsibility to defend democracy and human rights in the Western Hemisphere, stating: “The world is witnessing the many ways in which the Castro/Diaz-Canel regime has served as a puppet of Communist China, Iran, and most recently, Russia. The United States has a moral duty to defend the interests of our nation and we must continue to defend democratic order and justice in our hemisphere.”
Senator Scott, meanwhile, called the Biden administration’s Cuba policies ineffective, arguing that they have only served to embolden the regime.
“The illegitimate Cuban communist regime is a destabilizing force in the Western Hemisphere, a safe haven for terrorists, a friend of America’s enemies, an oppressor of the Cuban people, and a violator of human rights. Sadly, that has not stopped the Biden-Harris administration from pursuing the same weak appeasement policies prioritized by Obama for this State sponsor of terrorism, which has done nothing but strengthen the Castro/Díaz-Canel regime,” he said in this regard.
“The United States must take a stand, and I am proud to join in this resolution to make clear that we will NOT tolerate the human rights abuses of the illegitimate Cuban communist regime and will use the full force of our government to hold them accountable. I stand with the brave Cuban people and will never forget their struggle,” he added.
This resolution is part of a broader effort by U.S. lawmakers to hold the Cuban government accountable and support the people’s continued struggle for freedom. A companion resolution was introduced by Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) in the U.S. Congress.
