Santo Domingo.- Senator Omar Fernández and Deputy Tobías Crespo will be the representatives of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party in the National Council of the Judiciary (CNM), since this political organization holds the second majority in the Senate of the Republic and in the Chamber of Deputies.
The decision of the Fuerza del Pueblo was approved by the Political Directorate of the party in the meeting held on Monday night, which was headed by the president and leader of the organization, Leonel Fernández.
The People’s Force, as the main opposition party in the Dominican Republic, has made this decision in accordance with the provisions of Article 178 of the Dominican Constitution on the composition of the National Council of the Judiciary, which states that the CNM shall be composed of: the President of the Republic; the President of the Senate; a senator chosen by the Senate who belongs to a party or block of parties different from that of the President of the Senate and who represents the second majority; the President of the Chamber of Deputies; a deputy chosen by the Chamber of Deputies who belongs to a party or block of parties different from that of the President of the Chamber of Deputies and who represents the second majority; the President of the Supreme Court of Justice; a magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice chosen by the Court itself, who shall act as secretary; and the Attorney General of the Republic.
Currently, the Fuerza del Pueblo has 28 deputies and 3 senators, making it the second majority in both legislative chambers.
The National Council of the Judiciary has the following functions: 1) To appoint judges to the Supreme Court of Justice; 2) To appoint judges to the Constitutional Court; 3) To appoint judges to the Superior Electoral Court and their substitutes; and 4) To evaluate the performance of the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice.
