MIAMI, United States. – The activist Alexander Martínez Sucen, a delegate of the Movement of Opponents for a New Republic (MONR) in San Cristóbal, Artemisa, was arrested on August 8 after agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) forcibly broke into his home, according to denounced the Cubalex Legal Information Center.
According to the information, the PNR officers initially entered Martínez Sucen’s house and tried to arrest him without offering any explanation. Later that same day, the agents returned to the house and proceeded to arrest him without offering any explanation as to the reason for the arrest or the whereabouts of the detainee, Cubalex specified.
This type of arrest without legal justification has been a recurring tactic used by Cuban authorities to intimidate and harass opponents and activists on the island, according to various human rights organizations.
Martínez Sucen was released the same day and threatened with a fine during his detention. He also received a summons to appear at the PNR unit in San Cristóbal the following day, August 9.
Marti News reported on Monday that the San Cristóbal Police warned Martínez Sucen that he was being investigated for his meetings with “criminal elements” and for not having an employment relationship.
“On August 8, the Sector Chief came, invaded my house, without asking permission, and they loaded me and took my vehicle because I did not resist. They detained me for a few hours and told me that I had to show up the next day, otherwise I would be fined 1,000 pesos,” the activist told the aforementioned media.
He also added that a “Warning Report” was drawn up for him, indicating that he supposedly meets “with people who are not with the Government, (…) who kill cows, with criminal elements.”
“He also said [el acta] that they were going to monitor me for six months and that I had to work,” said Martínez Sucen.
