The ICC Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation into alleged crimes against humanity “continues closely,” and highlighted the online portal where potential evidence can be submitted. “If any individual or organization has information that may be relevant to this ongoing investigation, we would be grateful if you would submit it.”
The International Criminal Court’s Office said it is “actively monitoring” the situation in Venezuela following an escalation of repression by the administration of Nicolás Maduro to silence protests against the results of the presidential election.
In a written statement to reporters, the office of ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said it is “actively monitoring current developments and has received multiple reports of cases of violence and other allegations following the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela.”
According to the authorities, more than 2,000 people have been arrested following the protests that began on Monday 29th, in response to the results announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE) that gave victory to Maduro. The opposition, led by María Corina Machado, denounces a “fraud” and demands that all the voting records be shown.
It also noted that Khan’s office has been “engaged in engaging with the Government of Venezuela at the highest level to underscore the importance of ensuring that the rule of law is respected at this time and to emphasize that all persons must be protected from violations that may constitute crimes under the Rome Statute.”

Venezuela has been the subject of an ongoing investigation since November 2021 into alleged crimes against humanity. In particular, the ICC Prosecutor is investigating the commission of crimes of torture, including sexual violence, persecution, mass and arbitrary detentions, as well as enforced disappearances.
To date, no arrest warrants have been issued for any suspects. Prosecutor Khan has said his approach is complementary, but he does not dismiss the lack of action of national authorities to punish these crimes.
The ICC Prosecutor’s Office said that “these investigations continue with attention,” and highlighted the online portal where potential evidence can be submitted. “If any person or organization has information that may be relevant to this ongoing investigation, we would appreciate it if you would come forward.”
