Former PRI presidents describe Alito Moreno’s reelection as "farce"

Former PRI presidents describe Alito Moreno's reelection as "farce"

They warn that, for the first time in the history of the PRI, the leader is elected behind closed doors, without proposals, debate or future plans. They warned that the legal damage can be repaired when the electoral bodies annul the National Assembly, which approved that the party president can seek the leadership for two consecutive terms.

“The PRI is a party hijacked by Alejandro Moreno’s personal ambition, removed from the good institutional development of the party. The legal damage inflicted today on the PRI can be repaired when the INE and the Electoral Court annul the illegal National Assembly, as well as all the acts derived from it, such as the reelection. However, the moral damage caused by the illegal acts of the current leadership will be difficult to repair,” they said.

The former presidents maintained that the reelection of Alejandro Moreno affects the principles of substantive equality and gender parity to which the PRI is obliged, in accordance with the Constitution and the Statutes.

“The possibility that the current leader can be re-elected in two more ordinary periods, after having already concluded one ordinary and one extraordinary, is unconstitutional and unlawful because it fails to comply with and violates the rule of parity in the election of leaders, given that it does not allow gender alternation,” they claimed.

They pointed out that the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) has been permissive in the face of the “robbery” of the national leadership.

They also argued that the National Assembly – held on July 7, when the statutes were modified to allow the re-election of the president – has multiple illegalities in its execution, since the Regulations for its organization were not approved by the National Political Council as established in the Statutes.

They also pointed out that there was no timely information about the statutory changes that were to be voted on that day, nor was there broad access to the discussion tables for delegates interested in participating.
