Maria Corina Machado calls for a global protest for respect for the vote

On August 17, the fourth mobilization will be called by the opposition led by Machado after the announcement of the results by the National Electoral Council. The most recent was the vigil for the freedom of political prisoners, an event in which, by the way, another opposition leader was arrested.

María Corina Machado reiterated her call for a worldwide protest called for August 17 in defense of the vote. In a video shared this Sunday, August 11, on the social network X, the opposition leader, along with Venezuelan influencers and actors, such as Christian McGaffney, the protagonist of the film Simón, and Lele Pons, asked that people take to the streets in every corner of the country and the world.

“Wherever there is a Venezuelan, we will be there together. This time is different because we are different. Let’s shout together so that the world supports our victory and recognizes the truth and popular sovereignty,” said the coordinator of Vente Venezuela.

Towards the end of the audiovisual piece, the presidential candidate for the Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia, invited everyone to share it. “See you on the 17th. Pass it on (in reference to the video).”

It is still unknown what time the protests will begin and where the exact meeting points will be. Machado had said that more details would be given this Sunday at 6:00 pm, but the shared post did not mention that logistical information.

«Today I want to speak to you who do not recognize yourself in this Venezuela that we are seeing, who are tired of living without light, without water, of not knowing what you are going to eat, who were persecuted for saying what you think, who were fired for denouncing what is wrong, who have not been able to return to this country because your passport was revoked, to you who voted and want what you decided on July 28 to be respected. (…) Get active in your city and share this video with everyone you are going to invite to go together that day,» wrote the leader.

When was the call made?

On August 10, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia called for a demonstration throughout the country and abroad for next Saturday, August 17. Although they have not given details about the concentration points, they did ask Venezuelans to look for the voting record of their centers in the Web page enabled by the opposition to take her to the protest.

«Print it and bring it to the rally in your city. Let the world see, with your documents in hand, that we will not let ourselves be robbed. Share this image with all your Venezuelan friends because that day we will unite inside and outside Venezuela,» wrote the opposition leader on her official X account, the social network that, by the way, was blocked by the government of Nicolás Maduro.

“Let us defend the truth,” said Edmundo González Urrutia, who, according to the Carter Center itself, received more than 60% of the votes in the presidential elections of July 28.

This would be the fourth mobilization called by the opposition led by Machado after the announcement of the results by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which gave a victory to Nicolás Maduro, whose triumph has been recognized only by his allies, such as Russia, Nicaragua, Cuba, among others.

The first action that María Corina Machado called for was at the United Nations headquarters in Caracas, two days before the vote; the next was in Las Mercedes; the third was a vigil for political prisoners, on Thursday 10; and this last one for next Saturday.
