Biden says he left the race behind so his party can focus on beating Trump

The American president pointed out that the polls he had showed that the race was very close between him and Trump, and that it would have been decided at the last moment that he should not have resigned.

US President Joe Biden said he had dropped out of the re-election race so as not to be a “real distraction” for Democrats in Congress running for office, who feared the president (due to his unpopularity) would hurt them at the polls. Also, within the party, there was discussion about whether the current president, at 81 years of age, could fully assume a second term.

For this reason, he believes that his departure will help the Democratic Party concentrate its efforts on defeating Donald Trump, who is competing to return to the White House.

In an interview given this Sunday, August 11, to the American network CBS News, In his first speech since he dropped out of office last July, Biden said that while he has “the great honor of being president,” he also has an obligation to the country to do “the most important thing that can be done” to prevent Trump from winning, since, he said, he represents “a genuine danger to American security.”

«[Cuando] “I first ran, I thought I would be a transitional president. I can’t even say how old I am. It’s hard for me to say. Things got going very quickly. And the combination was… a critical issue for me still… is maintaining this democracy,” the American president said.

“The polls we had showed that the race was very close, that it would have been decided at the last minute. But what happened was that several of my Democratic colleagues in the House and the Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the races and I was worried that if I stayed in the race that would be the issue.

On July 21, Biden announced his resignation from re-election in the United States. In a statement posted on social media, he said that “it is the best thing for his party and for the country.” Back then, he said that his decision was the best thing for the party and for his country and that he would concentrate solely on his duties as president for the rest of his term.

Kamala Harris, who initially ran as the Democratic vice president, is now the presidential candidate.
