PRI leadership vote begins; Alito Moreno's re-election is on the cards

Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas is seeking re-election, meaning he will remain at the head of the PRI for four more years, after suffering his worst defeat in the party’s history on June 2.

PRI members will be able to vote for “Alito” Moreno, who has been in office since 2019, or for deputy Lorena Piñón Rivera.

The PRI’s 600 national councilors are expected to decide on the continuation of the leadership.

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) began its presidential renewal process on Monday, July 22.

Alejandro Moreno and Carolina Viggiano arrived at the party offices to register as candidates and seek reelection for four more years, the former as president and the latter as general secretary. Both submitted their documents to the PRI’s National Commission of Internal Processes, headed by Pablo Ángulo.

On July 10, the PRI’s Political Council approved that the party’s Assembly of Councilors be the one to elect the party’s next leader for the 2024-2028 period; however, the majority of the members of that internal body are close to Alejandro Moreno, so it is expected that they will seek to promote the reelection of “Alito.”
