Why does Petro claim that artificial intelligence can extinguish humanity?

Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposed this Thursday in Cartagena de Indias that the governments of Latin America join forces to study Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its risks, as it considers that this technology “has the capacity for human extinction.”

“Our proposal would be to first get together, put our teams of experts (…) to study the issue and its implications for Latin American societies,” Petro said, adding that it should be analyzed “how dangerous is, among other things we mentioned here, the interrelation between the climate crisis and artificial intelligence.”

The president, who spoke at the ‘Latin American and Caribbean Ministerial Summit on Artificial Intelligence: ColombIA’noted that it is important to have a “philosophical, ethical and political discussion on this emergence, which is an evolution of ICT and its impact on societies.”

“Artificial intelligence has to do with the market, because until now it is the mechanism of knowledge, it is algorithms, it is mathematics, a logical thought, which gives us the possibility that the machine produces through workers much more than before”he added.

The head of state pointed out that, in his opinion, AI goes beyond social network X because “it can simulate reality without anyone distinguishing the border between one thing and the other.”

“With a little patience, one can distinguish the border between truth and lies, but Artificial Intelligence cannot. It is much further, much more sophisticated, enough to confuse (…) the visual, the context and generate a new drug in the world, more powerful than fentanyl.”
Petro pointed out.

Objective of the summit

The meeting, which will start today and end tomorrow, will have three fundamental pillars, one of which is the creation of “enabling ecosystems” to strengthen the development of AI. It is also planned to boost the “digital education” through training and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence at all educational levels.

The last pillar is that of the “governance”, which seeks to establish regulatory frameworks in the region that ensure responsible and ethical use of AI.

The summit has the support of CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Union (EU), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
