The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) condemned the repression and use of technologies for intimidation and surveillance in Venezuela.
On Saturday, August 10, through the social network X, the IACHR stated that “blockages of messaging applications and social networks, and censorship of web portals” imposed by the government of Nicolás Maduro are of concern.

In this regard, the special rapporteur warned that these practices violate freedom of expression and the right to information.
At the same time, the IACHR noted that these blocks represent a form of censorship that limits access to information and journalistic work “and can cover up serious human rights violations.”
This week, the government blocked access to the Signal app’s website and Maduro ordered the social network X, formerly Twitter, to be blocked for 10 days.
