Clara Brugada maintains support for Caty Monreal... despite the Court's rulings

The origin of the conflict

Following the elections on June 2, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, from the Va por la CDMX alliance, made up of the PAN, PRI and PRD parties, was the winner with a margin of more than 11,000 votes over her closest rival, Morena’s Caty Monreal.

Faced with this situation, the then candidate, Caty Monreal, and the Morena party challenged the election, arguing that the votes were not counted correctly and that there were polling stations where the number of votes did not correspond to the district count.

On Friday, July 5, the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico City published the summary of the plenary agreement TECDMX-JEL-203/2024, which was approved and discussed in a private session ordering the recount of votes.

The summary indicates that the recount of votes is appropriate, taking into consideration the probable irregularities reported by the Morena party and by the candidate Caty Monreal regarding the counting and computation in different polling stations reported.

“The 09 District Council of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City, Cuauhtémoc Territorial Demarcation Headquarters, is ordered to proceed with the new scrutiny and computation indicated in the Plenary Agreement, in accordance with what is indicated in the Fourth Consideration of the resolution,” the electoral body states.

In this context, Rojo de la Vega accused the president of the Electoral Court, Armando Ambriz, through a video published on his social networks of ordering the recount of votes due to a “cronyism” that exists with Senator Ricardo Monreal and through which, his daughter, Caty Monreal, is favored.

“We won by almost 12,000 votes, the Monreals still do not recognize their defeat, even knowing that the numbers do not add up and that legally there is not a single argument to reverse the results. They are trying to snatch by dirty tricks what they did not get with votes,” said the elected mayor.

There are still challenges from Caty Monreal before the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico City and the federal court, against Alessandra Rojo de la Vega for alleged political gender violence towards Caty Monreal by suggesting that the former Morena candidate uses the surname of her father, Senator Ricardo Monreal, to obtain political “favors” from electoral bodies.
