Historic: Three Cubans sweep the men’s triple jump. None of them represent Cuba

Jordan Díaz, Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Andy Díaz took three places on the Olympic podium in the triple jump this Friday.

MIAMI, United States. – Cuban Jordan Díaz, who represented Spain at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, won the gold medal this Friday in the men’s triple jump, with a time of 17.86. He was followed by two other Cubans, Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Andy Díaz, who won silver and bronze respectively.

None of the medals went to the Island. While Pichardo, with a jump of 17.84, represented Portugal; Díaz, who achieved a mark of 17.63, was part of the official delegation of Italy.

The only Cuban representing the Caribbean island, Lázaro Martínez, scored 17.34 and came in eighth place.

In this way, Jordan Díaz, Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Andy Díaz displaced the named world champion in Budapest 2023, Burkinabe Hugues Zango (he jumped 17.50 this Friday).

The men’s triple jump was probably the most anticipated event of the day.

Martínez, the representative of the Island, managed to qualify for the competition after registering a jump of 16.79 meters in the preliminary phase, which placed him in 11th place. Cubans Cristian Nápoles and Andy Hechavarría were left out of the competition.

Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Jordan Díaz entered the competition as favourites, after qualifying with the best jumps in the preliminary round.

The new Olympic champion Jordan Díaz made his debut this year at the Paris Olympics. In 2021, when he was part of the Cuban athletics team that would participate in Tokyo 2020, he decided to settle in Spainrenouncing participation in the Olympic Games and two world championships.
