He Judiciary declared the extradition request admissible of former first lady Eliane Karp, who is in Israell. She is being investigated for the alleged crime of money laundering in the Ecoteva case.
Last May 2023, Karp Fernenbug took refuge in Tel Aviv, Israel, after her husband, former President Alejandro Toledo, was extradited to Peru from the United States at the end of April of the same year.
For its part, the Judiciary, through the Ninth Liquidating Criminal Chamber, declared her a contumacious defendant and has issued a national and international search and arrest warrant. In addition, it requested Israel to arrest her pretrially and began the extradition process.
Although our country does not have an extradition treaty with Israel, the authorities could appeal to the principle of reciprocity, within the framework of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

This international agreement establishes that member countries must cooperate in the prevention, investigation and punishment of acts of corruption, which could serve as a basis for requesting the extradition of Karp Fernenbug.
Eliane Karp: What is the former first lady accused of?
Eliane Karp, with her husband, Alejandro Toledo, and her mother, Eva Fernenbugfaces charges of money laundering, related to the handling of more than US$/17 million through accounts belonging to offshore companies Ecoteva Consulting GroupEcostate Consulting and Milan Ecotech, registered in Costa Rica.
Investigations and bank reports reveal that all of this money came from an account of the company Confiado Internacional in Panama. From this account, more than 9 million dollars were transferred to Ecostate Consulting and 8.4 million dollars to Milan Ecotech.
These funds were then transferred to Ecoteva: Ecostate made a transfer of 7.7 million dollars and Milan another of 8 million dollars. The prosecution has requested a sentence of 16 years and eight months in prison for Eliane Karp for her alleged involvement in these events.
Alejandro Toledo: Judiciary orders 30 months of preventive detention against the former president
This decision by the Judiciary against Karp comes after it issued a 30-month suspension from preventive detention to Alejandro Toledo for the Interoceanic South case. He is currently incarcerated in the Barbadillo prison serving 18 months of preventive detention while the investigation against him for the alleged crimes of collusion and money laundering advances.
The verdict was issued on Thursday, August 8, by Judge Victor Zuniga of the Fourth Preparatory Investigation Court during a virtual hearing. In response to this decision, Toledo’s defense announced that it will appeal.
It should be noted that a similar request had previously been rejected by the judiciary. In March, Judge Richard Concepción Carhuancho dismissed the request, arguing that the former president was extradited for the case related to sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceanic Highway, for which he had already been placed in preventive detention.
