Colombian athlete Mari Leivis Sánchez, originally from Turbo and living in Medellín since she was 16, will make her debut this Friday, August 9 at the Paris Olympic Games in the 71 kg category.

At 32 years old, Mari Leivis Sánchez earned her Olympic spot after finishing in seventh place at the Weightlifting World Cup in Phuket, Thailand. She achieved her Olympic dream thanks to her determination and this Friday she will make her debut in the weightlifting final in the 71km category.

In Cali, where the Colombian national team is based, the weightlifting specialist suffered a tear in her left leg last February, which put her participation in the World Cup in Thailand, the last qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, at risk.

Originally from Turbo, she was 32 years old and had lived in Medellín since she was 16 to perfect her weightlifting skills. She never let herself get discouraged, and the following month she achieved the dream of every athlete: qualify for the most prestigious sporting event in the world.

The dark-skinned athlete, who is 1.59 metres tall, competes in the 71-kilogram category and is able to lift 112 kilos in the snatch and 133 in the clean and jerk.

Sánchez, the silver medalist, who shined in her performance in the women’s 71 kg at the Pan American and Parapan American Games #Santiago2023, will seek victory in Paris.

His participation will be this Friday, August 9th on 12:30 pm Colombia time.
