Unpunctuality, Petro’s characteristic trait: how can it affect his leadership?

This Wednesday, August 7, marked the first two years of President Gustavo Petro’s government, which will last until 2026.

During this period, one of the characteristic features of the head of state at public events has been his unpunctuality. According to a study carried out by the portal la Empty chairDuring his administration, the president has failed to fulfill his commitments in Colombia and abroad 82 times.

In the count, prepared by Silla Vacía, the months with the most cancellations on Petro’s agenda were March and April 2023. On average, Petro cancelled nine events per month, which are added to the delays in public events and private meetings.

This characteristic trait, according to experts, can negatively impact their performance in the Government, since lateness can undermine their credibility, lower the morale of their environment, create perceptions of injustice and inequalityamong other consequences.

“A continued pattern of lateness can erode team morale and create a negative work environment, affecting employee motivation and engagement,” points out the Work Meter portal, which provides recommendations to business leaders.

For its part, according to the same portal, “The frequency of late arrivals can generate frustration and resentment among employees, who perceive a lack of fairness and commitment”.

Regardless of whether the tardiness comes from a head of state, as in the case of Petro, or from a businessman or industrialist, these actions directly impact leadership and decision-making.

High levels of disapproval

According to the most recent Colombia Opina survey, prepared by Invamer, which analyzes the image that Colombians have of different political figures, The head of state’s approval rating rose from 34% to 34.6%.

While this figure represents a slight improvement compared to the last poll of this type, carried out in May, he still faces a disapproval rate of 58.3%.
