Mother of a 11J protester denounces abuses against her family

HAVANA, Cuba. – Mailyn Fajardo Goicochea, Cuban human rights activist and mother of the protester of the July 11, 2021 (11J) Lázaro Noel Urgellés Fajardo denounced the arrest of her children’s father last Saturday as an “atrocious act.”

According to Fajardo Goicochea, CubaNetin the evening hours of Saturday, August 3, Saúl Valle Carvajal was arrested by several agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) who were driving the patrol car with license plate 603. The incident occurred when the man was in the vicinity of Coco Street, between San Benigno and San Indalecio, in the Santos Suárez neighborhood, Oct. 10.

“When they asked him for his ID, he said he didn’t have any and the police officers in the patrol car attacked him; they beat him up and took him to the unit,” Fajardo Goicochea said.

According to the woman, Valle Carvajal is currently in the Aguilera Police Unit in Lawton, charged with “a false crime of resistance, beaten, with a fractured jaw and without medical attention.”

“They haven’t taken him to the hospital yet, nor has anyone come down [a los calabozos] to see him or talk to him,” he said.

The activist also said that the authorities only informed her that the case had been sent to the Prosecutor’s Office and that she had to wait “four to five days to get a response.”

Fajardo Goicochea is the mother of four children. One of them is the political prisoner of 11J Lázaro Noel Urgellés Fajardowho is still serving a five-year sentence for the alleged crime of “sedition,” but is out of prison.

The young man was released at the end of May 2022 along with three other minors convicted of participating in the historic anti-government protests.

“I am tired of the repression, it is against me, against my family, I cannot stand so much injustice. How long will this abuse and lack of respect continue towards the citizens of this country? Just because I belong to what I belong, they are attacking my family, I ask for justice and for my husband to be released,” Fajardo Goicochea finally denounced.
