Ministry of the Interior presented data on domestic and gender violence
In the first half of 2024, 21 homicides of women were recorded, eight fewer than in the same period of the previous year. There were also 21,459 reports of domestic violence, 1,606 of sexual crimes and 11 homicides of women due to gender-based violence. The Undersecretary of the Interior, Pablo Abdala, pointed out that it is necessary to work on raising awareness in society in order to prevent this type of situation.
Abdala pointed out that domestic violence is an issue that concerns all Uruguayans and that its prevention does not only depend on the tasks carried out by the Ministry of the Interior. In this way, she called for continuing to raise awareness among the population and strengthening the inter-institutional response system.
According to data from the National Observatory on Violence and Crime, 21 homicides of women were recorded during the first half of the year, eight fewer than in the same period in 2023. In percentage terms, the figures represent a decrease of 27%. The ministry also reported that 11 of these homicides were due to gender-based violence.
Regarding reports of domestic violence and related crimes, 21,459 were registered in the first six months, which marks a decrease of 0.6% compared to the first half of 2023. For the ministry, no significant differences are observed between the two periods.
In another order, the first half of 2024 ended with 1,606 reports of sexual crimes. Compared to the same period in 2023, there are also no significant differences. As for the victims, 65% were children and adolescents; and the remaining 35% were over 18 years of age.
For her part, the director of INMUJERES, Mónica Bottero, pointed out that there are institutional channels to guide those who suffer from situations of gender-based violence. INMUJERES has the telephone line 0800 4141 to provide support to those who need it, she recalled.
