Actress Eileen Acosta: “I dream of making a career outside of Cuba”

Eileen Acosta

MATANZAS, Cuba. – As a child, Cuban actress Eileen Acosta León was quite active, participating in workshops and enrolling in the House of Culture in her native city. Saint Anthony of the BathsArtemisa. Although her beginnings were marked by singing and dancing, when she discovered acting she fell in love with it. During her studies at the National School of Art (ENA) her inclination towards the artistic world in general grew.

His debut on the small screen was in the comedy show directed by Delso Aquino Another with that storyIn recent years, the public has enjoyed his talent in soap operas such as Delivery and Vice versa. Currently, she takes on the role of Aitana in Be reborn: a mother who, due to abuse from her partner, has to abandon her son.

Eileen finds it difficult to decide between humorous or dramatic, since she is passionate about both, especially when the characters take her out of her comfort zone, are unrelated to her personality or require a lot of preparation.

―What did it mean to play Aitana?

―Playing Aitana was brutal; it demanded a lot from me as an actress. It was a hard work process, where I had almost no time to study; I practically had a week to prepare, because I had just finished filming. Vice versaIt was a very difficult experience, but a very nice one.

―If Eileen were faced with conflicts like those of the character, what would she do differently?

―I wouldn’t give so many explanations, I would take my son and go to the Police. The truth is that it is very difficult to say what I would do, because, not living that life, it is very easy to judge it. It is easier to give advice than to act. I think I would not allow myself to distance myself from my son, but you have to be in that situation, live a situation like that to know.

It depends on the support that I have; Aitana had none. Also, in any case it is a melodrama, a soap opera in which other things have to happen to reach a super objective.

―The best and worst of bringing Aitana to life…

―The best thing was the feeling of fighting, of being an empowered woman, of not depending on anyone, because Eileen has that, of not depending on a husband, on a man, and I think that was what I enjoyed most about the character. What frustrates me the most is that she doesn’t have her child in the time she wants, it makes me feel helpless, but, for there to be a soap opera, there has to be drama, conflicts.

The other thing is the scenes where I couldn’t react or respond like Eileen, but rather stay calm and patient. That was what I found most difficult and least enjoyable, especially the scenes of arguments where I would say other things and Aitana says the opposite. It was frustrating, I even lost my voice, I had a lump in my throat because I was accumulating so much anger.

―What character have you most enjoyed playing?

―I have really enjoyed all the characters I have played. I have been lucky enough to work with people who have helped me and I have not had any bad experiences with characters or colleagues; that contributes to enjoying the process. I cannot forget to mention Bebita, from Another with that storywhich was my first comedy role.

She was very playful, very evil, I loved that, because as a child I was quite active. Bebita had a lot of things to do with Eileen. In the case of the dramatized characters, one of the ones I liked the most was Aitana, who distances herself from me a lot, she has a very strong conflict with her son; I don’t have children. I had to study and work a lot.

That one, and another one I made with [la realizadora] Elena Palacios, in a story, with a character who goes through many emotions. I can’t reveal much, because it hasn’t come out, but she left me very exhausted at the end of each shoot and that means work and demands. Both characters have been a plus in acting.

―What role would you like to take on in future projects?

―I wouldn’t like to name a specific character, but one that had all the talents, that danced, acted, sang, that demanded a lot from me as an actress and for which I had to give 200%. Right now, I would like to play a negative, bad role, because I lack it.

―Among all the media, which would you choose?

―I think that, between television, cinema and theatre, I really like the latter, although I am not doing it at the moment. It is quite a sacrifice and you have to have a time dedicated to it; in my case I don’t have it, maybe later I will.

―References within the acting in Cuba…

―One of the actresses I like the most for her way of working… I have no words to describe her; every time I see what she does, I am left with my mouth open: Laura de la UzShe is an actress with an inexplicable talent, whether in theater, film or television, she also sings; she has a very beautiful energy, she gives off something that, in addition to being an actress, I really like as a person.

I also admire Blanca Rosa Blanco, Amarilys Núñez, Mirta Lilia Pedro, Ana Gloria Buduén, Yazmín Gómez… These last two worked with me in Be reborn And the truth is that I take my hat off to them. I admire those who are 50% actress and 50% good person.

―If Eileen hadn’t been an actress, what would she be then?

―I would have been so many things: hairdresser, makeup artist, stylist, cook… because, even in my day to day life, when I am not pursuing my acting career, I do anything else that has to do with that. I do my own nails, my own hair. I like and enjoy the whole world of beauty, makeup…

―What is a day like in your life when you are away from the spotlight and cameras?

―When I’m not working, I’m a homebody. I like to party, go out with my friends to have a beer, chat, tell each other things about our lives, relax. I really like my family, spending time with them as much as possible whenever I have free time.

I am always organizing events with my family, because I really can’t be without them. I talk to my mom and dad every day. I am very family-oriented, I need their support a lot for everything. I think I am emotionally dependent on them. I like to be at home, enjoy my husband, watch series, television, everything that has to do with the home.

―What are your pending dreams?

―Making films is perhaps my greatest wish, because the only thing I have done is a short film, not movies or feature films. The other thing is that I would like to have a work contract in SpainI love Spanish series and cinema, I enjoy it and it’s what I consume the most.

The dream I have is to achieve a super character top in a series, or not even topbut a little character who would give me the opportunity to be known internationally and make a career outside of Cuba. If I were to leave here, my country, I would like to continue with my career. I wouldn’t like to do anything else, although I’m not afraid of work. I would like to continue being an actress, which is what I studied and what I love.
