‘Living off the story’ is back

Pánfilo, Cuba, televisión, Vivir del cuento

MADRID, Spain.- On Monday night, Cuban homes once again enjoyed the popular comedy Live the story. After a long wait, the program returned with a chapter titled “The Invisible Man.”

As usual, the endearing character of Pánfilo (Luis Silva) found himself in an absurd situation, but one familiar to many Cubans: being removed from the list of consumers in the ration book. The plot once again reflected the reality of bureaucracy and the difficulties faced by citizens in accessing basic goods.

Chacón, Pánfilo’s eternal rival, provided a dose of humor by questioning the system that allows people who have emigrated to continue receiving benefits, while others, like Pánfilo, face bureaucratic obstacles to prove their own existence.

Pánfilo’s reaction, between disbelief and despair, generated identification among the public, who live through similar situations. And it was a reflection of the reality of Cubans who depend on the ration book to obtain their food. An administrative error or a delay in distribution can mean going hungry.

The actor Marlon Pijuanwho plays Isidoro, had announced the premiere through his Instagram account. “Attention, ladies and gentlemen. It premieres today Live the story after the Cuban soap opera. Chapter of this summer 2024… Everybody get ready that we are back on the screen. Finally!”, expressed the comedian in a video for his followers.

Filming of the new episodes began last March. Live the story, which has managed to remain on the air for 15 years despite censorship policies in Cuba, addresses everyday situations, as well as criticizes the shortages and bureaucracy suffered by Cubans on the island.

In addition to its success on television, the show has maintained an active presence on social media, where clips and sketches are widely shared, generating conversations and laughter inside and outside Cuba.

Led by Pánfilo, who has been crucial to the success of the program, Live the story has had a talented and versatile cast over the years, which has also seen some of its leading figures emigrate, such as Omar Francowho played Ruperto, Andy Vázquez, Facundo, and Irela Bravoto Cachita Caché.
