Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Department of State, Mark A. Wells, referred to the situation in Venezuela following the presidential elections held on July 28 and condemned Nicolás Maduro and his representatives for having “unjustly imprisoned members of the opposition and used force against peaceful protesters.”
In light of the escalating repression and persecution in the country, Undersecretary Wells urged Maduro and his representatives to “release all political prisoners and put an end to political repression.”
Similarly, the representative of the United States (US) said that they repudiate all types of political violence and support the Venezuelan people. Mark Wells said that they will continue to call for “dialogue instead of violence and repression” and reiterated that they are working with international partners to continue supporting the Venezuelans.
The US Undersecretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs also condemned Venezuela’s expulsion of diplomats from seven Latin American countries and the opening of a criminal investigation against the presidential candidate for the Unitary Platform, Edmundo González, and the opposition leader, María Corina Machado.
Likewise, Wells stated that they reviewed all the electoral records uploaded to the portal. ganovzla.comwhich the opposition claims is giving Edmundo González the victory in the presidential elections and asserted that “it would be almost impossible to falsify the minutes that were compiled and uploaded quickly after the end of the voting”; in light of this situation, the US invited the National Electoral Council (CNE) to publish the detailed minutes of the vote count as it promised it would do.
