Operation Galardón has dealt a severe blow to a network of fraudsters operating from the province of Chiriquí. In a joint effort between the National Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, 11 people linked to the crime Against Economic Assets in the form of scams through telephone calls were arrested.
Investigations revealed that these people made phone calls to their victims, making them believe that they had won prizes such as houses, cars, trips and money. To claim these supposed prizes, the victims had to make money transfers to cover the legal procedures.
However, once the payments were made, the prizes never materialized. Among those arrested are 8 women and 3 men, all of Panamanian nationality. These individuals are being investigated for the commission of telephone fraud crimes, with an economic loss exceeding 30 thousand dollars.
Operation Galardón included more than 20 simultaneous raids in various locations in the province of Chiriquí, thus dismantling a network of scammers mostly made up of women. The coordinated action of the authorities has made it possible to stop this criminal activity that had affected numerous citizens.
The National Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office continue to work to guarantee the security and economic well-being of the population, urging citizens to be alert and report any suspicious activity that may represent a risk of fraud.
