The Ministries of Education (Meduca) and Government (Mingob) signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement to enable the development of the Unpaid Community Work program of the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System, for the benefit of prisoners held in prisons across the country.
The agreement aims to offer inmates the opportunity to resocialize and commute their sentence, as well as to achieve the goals established by Meduca for the development of repair and maintenance programs in school facilities throughout the country.
The Minister of Education, Lucy Molinar, said that “it is a privilege for us to be able to serve the penitentiary center so that inmates can collaborate in our schools. We did this from 2009 to 2015 and, with great joy, I can tell you that today I have met inmates in the corridors of this institution who left and became Meduca officials for their excellent performance.”
The activities that will be carried out in the ministry’s offices and other facilities include cleaning of green areas, painting of structures, repair and maintenance of air conditioners and fences, electrical repairs, installation of floors and ceilings, cleaning and decoration of classrooms, among others.
“We are taking a very important step in the process of resocialisation of prisoners. Work and less leisure will lead us to actually fulfil the purpose of a penitentiary centre,” said the Minister of Government, Dinoska Montalvo.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works will carry out the evaluation of the prisoners who meet the profile, so that they can benefit from the objectives of the agreement, provide the list of inmates, assign daily guards, perform the calculation of commutation of sentence, among other provisions.
