In the first six months of the year, almost 70% of women’s deaths by femicide occurred at home in São Paulo. The data is part of a survey by the Sou da Paz Institute, which analyzed 124 cases during the period.
The number of victims increased by around 10% compared to the same period last year, when 114 cases were recorded.
According to the institute, most crimes are motivated by separation.
Sou da Paz also points out that the increase in cases was observed after the announcement of cuts, in 2023, in the budget of women’s defense police stations.
“The fact is that feminicides are increasing. Instead of cutting the budget, we need to increase investment to open more police stations that operate on weekends and at night, when women are most often victimized,” highlights the institute’s researcher, Natália Pollachi.
The State Department of Public Security reported in a statement that combating violence against women is one of the priorities. It also mentioned the expansion of channels for reporting this type of crime in the state, such as the expansion of Women’s Defense Police Stations to provide 24-hour service at police stations.
According to the department, those accused of domestic violence are monitored using electronic ankle bracelets after the custody hearing. Of those monitored, 30 were arrested for approaching the victim.
Victims of domestic violence can report it through the SP Mulher app and Cabine Lilás, an exclusive space within the Military Police Operations Center.
