If the request is accepted, the Attorney General’s Office will be authorized to request and access payment of any civil compensation.
On Monday, August 19, the Power of attorney will evaluate whether to order the Specialized Public Prosecutor’s Office for Money Laundering Crimes and Loss of Domain Process to incorporate as a civil actor in the preliminary investigation against Pedro Pablo KuczynskiThe hearing will be held virtually at 8:30 am.
The request aims to enable the Attorney General’s Office to intervene in the criminal proceedings, which would entail the possibility of requesting financial compensation from the State in the event that those under investigation are found guilty.
It all started as a result of the statements made by the former superintendent of Odebrecht in Peru, Jorge Barata, to the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office regarding alleged contributions to the Pedro Pablo Kuczynski’s presidential campaign in 2011, when he ran for the Alliance for Great Change.
This fact has generated a great controversy in the political and judicial sphere of the country, since Barata’s statements have called into question the transparency and legality of the financing of Kuczynski’s electoral campaign. The implications of these revelations could have a significant impact on the reputation and political career of the former president.
Also, in the same case, on July 11, Judge Zúñiga ruled to extend by 24 months the term of the preliminary investigation involving PPK and others, for alleged contributions from the Brazilian construction company for his 2011 presidential campaign.
The lawyer partially accepted the request made by the fourth office of the Specialized Corporate Supraprovincial Prosecutor’s Office for Money Laundering Crimes. This was done in order to order an extension of the preliminary investigation period, thus allowing the completion of pending proceedings to clarify responsibilities in this case.
In response to the decision, Kuczynski’s defense and representatives of both the prosecution and the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed appeals against the ruling. On July 18, Judge Zúñiga granted these appeals and sent them to one of the chambers of the National Superior Court of Specialized Criminal Justice for evaluation. This instance must organize a virtual hearing, with the participation of all parties, to decide on the appeals filed.
