MAS demands the release of prisoners for political reasons: Stop threatening Venezuelans

Rueda de prensa del MAS 17 julio

The Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) denounced the arrest of leader Richard Granadillo in the state of Aragua, without knowing of an arrest warrant against him. “Unfortunately, they are arresting citizens without any reason, in addition to starting a wave of repression against peaceful protests.”

The national general secretary of the Movement for Socialism (FURTHER), Felipe Mujica, denounced the arbitrary detention of Richard Granadillo, leader of the party in the Libertador municipality of Aragua state, while demanding his release and that of the rest of those detained for political reasons.

Mujica explained that Granadillo’s arrest took place on Sunday, August 4. He stressed that the MAS has never been involved in violent acts and advocates “peaceful, electoral and democratic solutions that lead to the country’s reconciliation.”

“The government must stop the level of violence, and its spokespeople must stop threatening Venezuelans. Unfortunately, they are arresting citizens without any reason, in addition to initiating a wave of repression against peaceful protests,” he said at a press conference.

The MAS secretary regretted the violence unleashed after the results of the July 28 elections were known, and said that Venezuela “should have entered a stage of dialogue, recognition and reconciliation (…) The National Electoral Council and the Supreme Court of Justice have the peace of Venezuela in their hands.”

He pointed out that the CNE should have allowed the various audits to verify the results of the presidential elections and to verify the complaint made by Enrique Márquez, who claimed that the numbers read by the rector Elvis Amoroso were not totaled in the corresponding room.

The political leader indicated that on July 28 “the majority of Venezuelans chose Edmundo González as their new president,” a result that must be respected. For this reason, he rejected the possibility that the electoral dispute be settled by the TSJ.

“The government is aware that it was defeated in the elections and is now attacking with a radical plan to intimidate and frighten society, first with the illegal proclamation of Maduro and then with the denial of the alternation in the country, errors that will have a great political cost. What Maduro has to do is rectify and recognize the true results,” he said.
