Santiago.- The Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago (HOMS) continues to set the standard in medical innovation, having performed a fenestrated aortic endoprosthesis surgery for the first time in the Dominican Republic.
Vascular and endovascular surgeon Andrés Marín, who led the operation, accompanied by Mexican vascular surgeon Dr. Gabriel Hernández, explained that this procedure is used to correct an aortic aneurysm and consists of implanting a modified prosthesis to open holes and connect with the visceral arteries, which are those that go to the main organs of the abdomen.
Dr. Marín points out that the great advantage of this surgery is that the patient can walk within hours and leave the hospital the day after the operation, compared to open techniques that require long stays in intensive care.
“This represents a great advance for the country and the hospital, which is innovating to benefit the health of Dominicans,” he said.
Fenestrated aortic endoprosthesis surgery opens the possibility of treating complex patients and provides an alternative to conventional high-risk surgical methods. In addition, it significantly reduces morbidity and mortality.
The specialist points out that this surgical technique had not been performed in the country due to its level of complexity. However, this step demonstrates the level of training that local surgeons possess.
