MIAMI, United States. – The candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and opposition leader María Corina Machado asked the National Armed Forces and the Venezuelan Police on Monday to respect the popular will expressed in the elections of July 28 and to refrain from repressing the people.

In a statement dated August 5Both leaders stressed the legitimacy of the electoral process and denounced the repression by the Nicolás Maduro regime.

“Venezuela and the entire world know that in the elections of July 28 our victory was overwhelming,” said Gonzalez and Machado. “From the most humble citizen, witness, polling station member, officer of the Armed Forces, police, to international organizations and governments, they know it. With the minutes in handthe planet has seen and recognized the triumph of democratic forces.”

They also highlighted the massive citizen participation: “We have done our part. We have carried out the most formidable civic mobilization so that the electoral victory was unquestionable. It is a victory obtained with enormous energy and firmness, and we have done it in peace. We obtained 67% of the votes, while Nicolas Maduro achieved 30%. That is the expression of the popular will.”

González and Machado made a direct appeal to members of the Armed Forces and police forces: “We call on the conscience of the military and police to stand by the people and their own families. With this massive violation of human rights, the high command is aligning itself with Maduro and his interests.”

Both leaders also asked the military and police not to repress the people and to fulfill their constitutional duty: “Members of the Armed Forces and police forces, fulfill your institutional duties, do not repress the people, but support them.”

The statement also denounces the violent repression and manipulation of the election results by the Venezuelan regime. “Maduro refuses to admit that he was defeated by the entire country and, in the face of legitimate protest, has launched a brutal offensive against democratic leaders, witnesses, members of the polling station and voters with the absurd aim of hiding the truth and, at the same time, trying to corner the winners.”

González and Machado reaffirmed that they have “irrefutable proof of victory.”The Carter Center Report “It is devastating regarding the conditions and the election result, while Maduro is trying to fabricate results when, in addition, the legal period for publishing them has expired,” they stressed.

The statement also emphasizes the guarantees offered by the new democratic government: “The new government of the Republic, democratically elected by the Venezuelan people, offers guarantees to those who fulfill their constitutional duty. It also emphasizes that there will be no impunity. This is a commitment that we assume with each and every Venezuelan.”

Finally, the statement reaffirms the new government’s commitment to democracy and the rights of the Venezuelan people: “We won this election without any discussion. It was an electoral avalanche, full of energy and with an admirable citizen organization, peaceful, democratic and with irreversible results. Now it is up to all of us to make the voice of the people respected. The proclamation of Edmundo González Urrutia as President-elect of the Republic proceeds immediately.”

“This is a new chapter for the country, one that promises justice, respect for the popular will and a nation free of repression,” the two leaders concluded.
