The province of Huanta woke up to roads blocked by stones and trees, school classes suspended and businesses closed, due to the indefinite anti-mining strike that had already been announced weeks ago. So far, it is reported that there is no passage on the routes to Huancayo, Vraem and Lima.

The citizens’ request is that the Ministry of Energy and Mines permanently close mining activity in the springs, such as that carried out in the headwaters of the Razuhuillca basin. “Our town is purely agricultural and we consume water from the entire Razuhuillca mountain range, not only the province of Huanta but also part of La Mar”said the president of the Huanta Defense and Development Front in charge, Rubén Huamaní.

Response from Governor Wilfredo Oscorima
In this regard, the regional governor of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima, stated on August 2 that the closure of informal mines is underway, which is why the strike in the province of Huanta would not make sense.
“Any forceful measures they take would make no sense and the only thing they will generate is more poverty and unrest in the people of Huanta. Our region needs to work, we cannot stop.”he explained.
Despite his call and report, he did not convince the residents of Huanta, who warn that they will radicalize their struggle if their requests are not met.
