Great Britain claimed first ever track cycling title of the Paris Olympics by winning the women’s team sprint with a new world record on Monday at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome, southwest of Paris.
The British Katy Marchant, Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane beat New Zealand in the final with a time of 45.186. It was the first of twelve Olympic titles to be decided this week at the velodrome.
“It’s a dream come true”celebrated Finucane, 21.
In front of numerous fans, the British were able to count on their young prodigy Emma Finucane, individual sprint world championto sweep away his rivals on a very fast track.
Germany, reigning four-time world champion, won bronze by defeating the Dutch in the duel for third place.
The Mexican team, with Jessica Salazar, Yuli Verdugo and Daniela Gaxiola was fifth, ahead of China, which had won gold at the two previous Olympic Games.
In team pursuit, AAustralia, Great Britain, Denmark and Italy finished in that order the qualifiers, and remain in the race for gold before Wednesday’s final.
In men’s team sprint, the big favourites The Dutch set the best time in the qualifiers with 41.279a new Olympic record, ahead of Great Britain, Australia and Japan.
These nations will face the teams ranked between 5th and 8th. in a direct duel in the first round on Tuesday.
