Brazilian presidential advisor Celso Amorim believes that Venezuela needs dialogue to overcome the country’s internal crisis. He said that while the CNE has not published results, the data from the Unitary Platform are not official.
Celso Amorim, special advisor to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stressed the need to encourage dialogue between the parties in Venezuela in order to move forward in solving the crisis in the country and highlighted the joint work being done with Colombia and Mexico.
Amorim, in an interview with CNN Chile, stressed that Brazil’s policy is not to interfere in the internal politics of states, but he did say that the Venezuelan situation is an issue that concerns all of Latin America and that is why he is in contact with all parties to find a solution.
He criticized the fact that to date the National Electoral Council (CNE) has not published the disaggregated minutes confirming the victory of President Nicolás Maduro and said that the crisis goes beyond recognizing one candidate or another.
«It is a little more complicated than that. (Nicolás) Maduro offered a general count, but he has not provided the minutes, which are an essential element. I myself asked him what is happening with that and he told me that in the next few days, the next few days he can be very flexible, but the truth is that there are no minutes right now. On the other hand, the opposition data is not official, it should be the CNE that proclaims the winner and not the State Department», in reference to the US position in favor of Edmundo González Urrutia.

Asked about the appeal filed by President Nicolás Maduro before the Supreme Court of Justice, Celso Amorim avoided giving a direct answer on the matter, saying that what matters is avoiding further conflicts and working for the common good.
“These are hypotheses, I don’t know what will happen. I know that Maduro sent a presentation to the Supreme Court, which has a room called the electoral chamber… mmm (hesitates), yes, an electoral chamber. But I think that now it is about talking, because a country divided in the middle with potential conflicts that are very large is not in the interest. Nothing is easy in a country that has been divided for a long time,” he said.
President Nicolás Maduro held a meeting on Monday, April 29 with Celso Amorim, special advisor to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who traveled to Venezuela to participate in the monitoring of the presidential elections on Sunday 28th, to whom he promised that he would deliver the minutes of the election count “in the next few days.”
According to the newspaper O Globo, Amorim was received by Maduro at the Miraflores Palace. The president of the 2020 National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, was present at the meeting, in a conversation that – according to diplomatic sources consulted by the newspaper – took place in a cordial atmosphere.
Maduro took advantage of the meeting to warn the Brazilian envoy that his administration would be at risk of being the target of an alleged “coup d’état” by radical opposition sectors.
The governments of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico have joined forces to find a way out of the political crisis in Venezuela, which has been exacerbated by the National Electoral Council’s announcement that Nicolás Maduro was the winner without presenting the complete results.
