Santo Domingo.- The Union of Journalists and Digital Media of the East (Upmedi) recognized the years of professional practice and the career of communicators from the Santo Domingo Este municipality in an event called “Eastern Communication Night 2024.”
During the activity, held in the halls of the Dominican Medical College (CMD) Santo Domingo branch and headed by the president of UpmediFabián Suero, the more than 50 years of professional journalism practice of Rafael Polanco and Diógenes Tejada were highlighted, as well as the 46 years of David Lorenzo.
There was also a posthumous tribute to Robert Vargas, who passed away too soon and was a genuine representative of journalism in Santo Domingo Este. Vargas was the founder and director of the digital newspaper Ciudad Oriental.
Radio broadcaster José Lahoz was recognized for his contribution to the creation and management of several television channels in the province of Santo Domingo, and journalist Yris Neida Cuevas, for her nearly three decades of professional journalism in the country.
Likewise, Telecanal 28 TV was recognized for its 24 years of uninterrupted broadcasting in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, supporting journalists, communicators and entrepreneurs in the eastern region.
In addition, journalist Luis Emilio Reyes Ledesma was recognized for his nearly four decades of experience in the most important media outlets in the Dominican Republic, as was veteran Ramón Sánchez, who has made great contributions to communication in Santo Domingo Este.
In his keynote address, the president of Upmedi said that with the first edition of “Eastern Communication Night,” the organization he heads is paying off the debt that the unions have with journalists who have dedicated their lives to the exercise of that profession.
“We, as Upmedi, are making a first payment on this historic debt; journalists’ unions and the authorities of the province of Santo Domingo will be responsible for settling it in full,” said Suero.
Among those attending the “Eastern Communication Night” were Aurelio Henríquez, president of the Dominican College of Journalists (CDP) and businessman and politician Graciano Luciano, as well as active and retired communicators who are committed to the practice of journalism in the Eastern region.
