The deadline for all parties and federations to hold their conventions to choose the candidates who will contest the 2024 municipal elections, scheduled for October, ends this Monday (5).
In election years, party conventions are a mandatory step for registering candidates, who must have their names officially registered by their parties. These are formal meetings – in person or in a hybrid format – in which party members express their support. These meetings are organized in accordance with the bylaws of each party.
Confirmation of applications
In general, the largest parties usually arrive at the conventions with their main names already decided, making the event a kind of celebration to confirm the candidacies. Possible coalitions are also deliberated at the same meeting.
Each party acronym, coalition or federation may have only one candidate for mayor and deputy mayor in each municipality. In the case of councilors, each party may have as candidates up to the total number of seats to be filled, plus one.
According to this year’s electoral calendar, after the conventions, parties have until August 15 to register all candidates. To date, almost 45,000 candidates have been registered for this year’s elections.
This year, almost 156 million Brazilians are eligible to vote in the country’s 5,569 municipalities.
