Huancayo: Woman serving 30-year sentence for a crime she did not commit

For a year, Zolmida Janampa De La Cruz has been serving time in the Huancayo prison for a crime she claims she did not commit and from there, through her family, she claims her innocence. “My cousin has been in jail for a year and as family members we are trying to prove her innocence. This is an incident that occurred in 2010 and she was only arrested and sentenced last year. She had never been notified before.”said Olivia Mallqui De La Cruz.

What happened

It is worth mentioning that the events date back to June 7, 2010, when Kevin MA was kidnapped by Solmira Gladis Janampa, who after asking for a large sum of money as ransom was released after 2 days.

The parents of the victim filed a complaint against the case. However, in 2012 the accused was changed to Zolmida Janampa.

“When they questioned the victim, he gave characteristics that did not match Zolmida, my cousin rather gave a description of Solmira Gladis Janampa Díaz. In addition, on the date of the kidnapping, Zolmida was in Satipo on the farm, because we are migrants.”said Olivia Mallqui. She added that the other person accused of the events also does not recognize Zolmida.

She also stated that the events occurred at the “La Penca” club in Huancayo, and during the 10 years that the case has been going on, Zolmida was never notified, until May 11, 2023, when she was arrested at her workplace in La Merced.

She is currently serving a 30-year sentence in the Jauja women’s prison for a crime she claims she did not commit.

According to relatives, the prosecutor in charge ignored all the evidence presented by her lawyer. The hearings were virtual during the pandemic and the kidnapping victim did not recognize Zolmida as the person with whom she was at the nightclub. When the nullity was presented to the Judiciary, the judges ratified the sentence.

However, the family will begin by asking for the release of Zolmida Janampa, who has difficulties in accessing a lawyer, since she does not have financial resources, she has a 10-year-old son, who was left in the care of his parents and they live alone in San Ramón. Her cousins are the ones who support her with money to cover the cost of the lawyers, since no institution wants to support her.
