“We demand an end to the repression,” the Vente Venezuela Human Rights Committee said on social media, while reporting the arrest of Andrés Ruiz, coordinator of the political organization in Maneiro, Nueva Esparta state. His wife and son were arrested when they tried to prevent the police procedure.


The Vente Venezuela Human Rights Committee denounced the arrest of Andrés Ruiz, coordinator of the party in the Maneiro municipality, in Nueva Esparta.

“Andrés Ruiz, coordinator of Vente Venezuela in the municipality of Maneiro, Nueva Esparta, was arrested by officials of the Bolivarian National Police along with his son and wife, who were trying to avoid arrest,” he said on his Twitter account. X without indicating whether the arrest occurred in the morning or early hours of August 4.

“We demand an end to the repression. Enough is enough!” he added. The arrest was announced at a time of tension in the country, after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced President Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential elections.

The government of Nicolás Maduro has accused the opposition of allegedly planning days of destabilization of the country. On Saturday, August 3, the president indicated that 2,013 citizens have been arrested, allegedly for participating in acts of vandalism during the demonstrations. He added that 80% of those arrested were trained in Chile, Peru and the United States.

On Friday, August 2, the Executive said that the dissidents were planning a grenade attack in Bello Monte, an area located towards the center of Caracas. On Tuesday, August 30, officials from the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Command (Conas) arrested the leader of Voluntad Popular, Freddy Superlano.

On Friday, August 2, security forces also arrested Roland Carreño, a journalist and leader of Voluntad Popular. The persecution of journalists has escalated: in one week, more than eight journalists have been arrested, according to reports from the National Union of Press Workers and the National College of Journalists.
